Most people have heard the fears and concerns about mercury in our food supply. It is a growing problem that has no quick or easy fix. However, there are things that we can do to reduce our susceptibility to mercury poisoning. Avoidance is the first idea that comes to mind, but that becomes increasingly difficult. Another possibility is a natural defense, and luckily there is one that we can implement rather easily: Selenium. Selenium is an element, a mineral that our body uses, but is not found in most common diets.
Fortunately, there is an easy and natural way to supplement with selenium. Brazil nuts are easily the best natural source for selenium, and they are very cost effective because they contain so much. I eat these Sunfood Wild Brazil nuts, and one bag will last a long time, maybe six months or more. This is also a good brand, and has become much cheaper recently. Of course there are other good brands too.
Eating just 1 nut a day is helpful. Sometimes I eat 2 or 3. It is NOT recommended to eat more than 5 every day. Of course it is ok to sometimes eat more than the recommended amount 🙂
The Sunfood brand is excellent, and comes in a high quality resealable bag, so the nuts stay fresh for a long time. You can keep them for more than a year, so it is very convenient. Organic. Non-GMO, wild from the Amazon rainforests. Whatever brand you get, try to make sure they are truly organic.
The main reason that I eat Brazil nuts is for selenium, which protects us from mercury. In addition, these nuts are also a good source of magnesium and other minerals. The brand I linked to is especially nutritious, as they are wild nuts. Wild fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. are likely to be the most nutritious because they are growing naturally in their native environment.
Enjoy.
